The Oceanic Society, provides a shining example of the type of awareness and environmental education that DotGreen believes will improve our world.
The Oceanic Society is currently working in Suriname, a country formerly known as Dutch Guiana, to preserve the world's population of Leatherback Turtles. While the species has been legally protected since 1954, many locals have been poaching dangerous numbers of sea turtle eggs out of economic disparity, which could soon cause a devastating decline in population.
To help combat this issue, The Oceanic Society is working together with the grassroots group Ngo Santours to implement fieldtrips for local schoolchildren to the turtles' nesting beaches. The two organizations trained twenty young adults as educators on this subject in 2008, and plan to expand their youth outreach to the indigenous village of Wanshishia, where a large portion of the egg trafficking takes place.
Through the positive education of children, The Oceanic Society is making a difference in our world. For more information about The Oceanic Society, based in San Francisco and their program in Suriname, please visit their website: www.oceanicsociety.org
